There are nine members on the Alabama State Board of Education. Governor Robert J. Bentley serves as president of the Board by virtue of his elected office. Ella B. Bell serves as vice president, and Jeff Newman serves as president pro tem. The State Superintendent, Thomas R. Bice, Ed.D., serves as the secretary and executive officer and is appointed by and serves at the pleasure of the Alabama State Board of Education. With the exception of the annual meeting on the second Tuesday in July, the Board holds meetings in the auditorium of the Gordon Persons Building in Montgomery, Alabama, on the second Wednesday of each month. Work sessions are held in Plaza 104 Gordon Persons Building on the second Thursday of each month.
